Another DJ out of John Digweed‘s Bedrock school, Britain’s Danny Howells has been given one of the more prominent platforms available right now to those in his line of work, a release on the Global Underground label. His mix is an energetic blend of choppy trance or smooth house, depending on your definitions, but one thing is clear–this man has good taste and a frightening focus on dance-floor flow. Playing with the rise-and-fall dreamscape of trance, Howells works with a house music aesthetic in that he starts in hard with a beat and never really drops it out of the mix, especially on the first disc. His ingredients are a mish-mash of DJ colorings, incorporating DJ Dan‘s subwoofer-destroying house anthem “Put That Record On” on the first disc, and the glowstick waver “All Exhale” from Luke Slater on the second. But he never really tips his hand one way or the other, somehow managing to create a satisfying and relentless record for fans of house, trance, or both. –Matthew Cooke
