About the Author
Brought up in northern England, ANDREW HUMPHREY first traveled to Egypt in 1988 on a brief holiday, but he liked it so much he decided not to go home. Since then his life has been divided between the color and chaos of Cairo, and the rather more leaden skies and ordered deadlines of the London publishing world. On assignment for a variety of periodicals, including National Geographic Traveler and The Wall Street Journal, over the years, he has explored every part of Egypt, cruising Lake Nasser, watching the sun rise from Mount Sinai, and sleeping beneath the stars in the Grand Sand Sea. His greatest fascination, however, remains with Cairo, its people, and their culture. In 1997 he co-founded an English-language newspaper, The Cairo Times, all the better to immerse himself in the goings-on of Um al-Dunya, “the Mother of the World.” He has also the author or co-author of several guides to Cairo and Egypt, as well as to Syria and the Middle East.
