The third movement, for example, is a masterwork of conductorial tempo-control. Brahms wrote no changes of tempo in this movement, and Abbado does nothing overt, yet there is a near constant natural give-and-take in response to the words…Then the performance ends. Abbado knows how good it was, the choral singers know, the orchestra knows. And the audience sits in silent tribute for a full forty seconds.
