From the Artist

I am most honored to be part of this remarkable Skywoman project, conceived while walking through the fields of Ganondagan, the birthplace of Jikonsahseh. I was fortunate to sing parts of Skywoman for my grandmother Gertrude before she went on her journey along the stars where she has been embraced by my father and her son, the late Clifford Shenandoah. I would like to thank my biggest supporters: my husband Doug and daughter Leah, my mother Maisie and siblings Jerry, Wanda, Diane, Vicky and Danielle. My family is always there for me across still waters and through life’s rapids. I am stronger and more blessed because of them. A deep ‘niawen:kowa’ (great thanks) to all who made Skywoman a reality: musicians, producers, the folks at Silver Wave, and especially to those who will pause to listen to our music. Skywoman has been an exciting challenge which will, I trust, speak to the best of who we are. ~Joanne Shenandoah

About the Artist

Ms. Shenandoah is a two time Grammy nominee (2001/2004), and a multiple award winning Native American composer and performer. She is considered America’s foremost Native American recording artist and has performed and recorded with many renowned musicians. Her compositions have been heard on CNN, NPR, HBO, Northern Exposure, the Discovery Channel, PBS and more. Ms. Shenandoah’s music reflects the indigenous philosophy and culture which continues to have a profound effect on the world today. She is a Wolf Clan member of the Iroquois Confederacy – Oneida Nation. Her original compositions combined with a striking voice enable her to embellish the ancient songs of the Iroquois using a blend of traditional and contemporary instrumentation.
